COVID-19: No additional time limit for requesting an assessment review

Written by Jonathan M. Fecteau and Sylvain Bélair

April 21, 2020 -For several Québec municipalities, including the City of Montréal, January 1, 2020 marked the coming into force of new assessment rolls that will serve as the basis for the imposition of municipal and school taxes for at least the next three years.

Therefore, April 30 of the first year of a three-year assessment roll constitutes the deadline for filing a request for a review of the assessment assigned to an immovable. Despite the current context related to COVID-19, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing has declined to grant an additional deadline, regardless of several requests from citizen groups. Thus, property owners have until April 30 inclusively to file a request for a review regarding one of their buildings, if applicable.
